Summer for soccer is now officially underway! FTSC has six teams active in six leagues through District Sports (not counting the internal 5s league) but with an odd number of teams in all but one of those six leagues, we only saw four competitive matches this past week, in addition to the return of Friday Night Lights and the annual FTSC member appreciation picnic.

On Monday, new D3 co-ed team Crock Pot Body opened their summer schedule with a 1-0 win against SuperSlowmo Toca at Cardozo, putting them tied for first in points but fifth in GD in the 11-team league. Tonight they'll play at Roosevelt against Stormtrooper Accuracy, who despite their name managed a 5-0 win in their respective opening match.

The Feds are doing double-duty this summer with both a Thursday evening league and WAWSL upper division on Saturdays. This week, they had byes in both leagues, though, so they held a scrimmage on Saturday before several members made it to the member picnic. WAWSL will be off this week for the holiday, but the Feds will still get to see action on the field this Thursday against Mudsligners.

Victorious Secret put in a well-played, strong showing in what was ultimately a 1-2 defeat to Maroon VIII (TBD how they recruited those extra three band members!) in their Saturday opening match of the WAWSL lower division. Secret's goal was a beautiful one-touch shot from Meryl (not Streep, but she was named after the actress) that she won by capitalizing off an errant Maroon VIII pass. The scoreline stayed close thanks to heroics from goalkeeper Rose - who got engaged during the pandemic, congrats!

Also on Saturday, YUCK got into action in a big way, racking up nine goals against Club Logan. Their opponents managed a consolation goal to spoil the clean sheet, but YUCK now tops their league on goal differential.

On Sunday, both of FTSC's D3 men's teams got to open their season - against each other! The Ball Bangers controlled the first half, with Eddie opening the scoring just before the first water break and Arturo making good on a giveaway not long after the water break. Finlandia started the second half much more composed and managed to take multiple shots at the Ball Bangers' goal over the course of the second half, sending some just over the crossbar or forcing Michael to make saves. Despite the pressure, it was the Bangers to bang another one in as Carlos won a rough challenge in Finlandia's half, which Arturo sent low and wide past Finlandia's 'keeper Andy, making the final score 3-0 in favor of the Ball Bangers.

Finlandia team outing (plus one Ball Banger) at El Rey after our loss - but with beer, tacos, and the Euro on TV, was it really a loss?
